The Tango Embrace: Origin, Aesthetics, and Evolution (1801–1915)

¿Is tango the first dance based on an embrace? Where does the aesthetics of tango come from? Does tango choreography have an Argentine origin?

An iconographic journey from 1801 to 1915 to trace the origins of the tango embrace.
The embrace in Buenos Aires and around the world, according to historical records, analyzing the many myths surrounding its origin and evolution.
During the lecture, more than 50 images from the periods discussed will be presented. Films dating from 1883 to 1915 will also be shown.

Tango and Cinema in the Early Twentieth Century

A brief overview of iconic moments in the relationship between cinema and tango.

Tango Danced Between Men: Myth or Reality?

An analysis of the early decades of danced tango and its relationship with dancing between men. Myth or reality?

A journey through the iconography, films, and texts of the period in order to determine the true nature of this practice.

Among the material presented, there will be two films from the early twentieth century in which we can see one female couple and one male couple dancing tango together, as well as dozens of previously unpublished photographs. Despite the existence of these images, we will dismantle this tango myth by understanding its true scope.

The Great Myth of Canyengue!!!

¿Is the Canyengue we know today a primitive style or a modern invention? When did this dance style appear? How true is what has been sold to Europe about it?

Who are its most famous practitioners? What do the “old milongueros” tell us about this style? What do the most renowned teachers have to say about it?

Videos, photographs, and testimonies from the creators of the style. A journey through the history of the dance that will reveal the myths and truths surrounding this style.

The Arrival of Tango Abroad

Contrary to what has been established by official history, Argentine tango did not arrive in Europe through the niños bien, nor as a result of the alleged 1907 trip made by Villoldo and Gobbi. Nor did it arrive aboard the Fragata Sarmiento in 1906, and neither Casimiro Aín, Bernabé Simarra, nor Saborido were the first dancers to export it.

We will analyze the historical records in order to identify the true pioneers in the dissemination of the genre, among whom were three Italians—precisely the first professional dancers to spread tango throughout Europe and the Americas.
